American Boy is a playground. By interacting with items in the bedroom, the participant encounters clues about the child protagonist, and their continuous process of cultural immigration/integration. Objects are imbued with hidden narratives, evocative of the arduous process of assimilation and the reorientation of personal identity.

playground (2021)

A private space, playground is the protagonist’s means of coping and processing immigration and the forging of a new cultural identity. Be it on the desk, in the drawers, or on the wall, ephemera is left for the participants to uncover, each pointing to varying strategies and attempts at anchoring identity.

Tutorails with Max! (2021)

Intentionally misspelled, Tutorails with Max! is a series of video tutorials on how to become American, each video an attempt at Americanization through teaching and practice. Tutorials range from be AMERICAN with Max!, to magic trickks so kids liek you with Max! Each is an absurd attempt at integration, while highlighting the arduousness of cultural assimilation.

the thing behind me (2021)

Both literally and figuratively, the thing behind me is a door blocking the external world, one which constantly attempts to penetrate the sanctuary of the room. Locked and barricaded by laundry, the outside becomes physically inaccessible, while sonically present, contrasting the playful nature of playground, the piece located directly across from it.
